The mg/kg Formula Explained

For Ibuprofen (marketed as Motrin or Advil), the standard pediatric dose is 10mg per kg of body weight. This dose is typically given for fevers over 102.5°F (39.2°C) or moderate pain.

When to use 5mg/kg?

For lower fevers (under 102.5°F), pediatricians sometimes recommend a lower dose of 5mg/kg. You can adjust the "Target Dose" in the calculator above to see this value. However, most parents use the 10mg/kg standard to ensure efficacy.

Calculated Safety Limit

"The daily maximum for Ibuprofen is 40mg/kg per day. At a standard dose of 10mg/kg, this means you can give at most 4 doses in 24 hours."

Safety FAQs

How old must my baby be?

6 Months. Unlike Tylenol, Ibuprofen should NOT be given to infants under 6 months unless specifically directed by a doctor, due to immature kidney function.

Take with food?

Yes. Ibuprofen can irritate the stomach lining. It is best to give it with milk or a meal to prevent stomach aches.

Antibiotic suspensions are often "reconstituted" by the pharmacist with water. Once mixed, most only last for 10-14 days and many require refrigeration. Check your bottle's storage instructions!

Warning: Beware of "Infant Drops". They are MORE CONCENTRATED (50mg / 1.25mL) which equals 200mg/5mL. This is double the strength of Children's Liquid. 5mL of drops would be a double dose.
