How to Dose Children's Motrin

Children's Motrin is commonly used for fevers and aches. The standard liquid concentration for "Children's" Motrin is 100mg/5mL. This is different from the concentrated Infant Drops.

Important Safety Rules

  • Shake Well: Ibuprofen prevents settling. Always shake the bottle before measuring.
  • Use the Cup: The 100mg/5mL bottles usually come with a dosage cup. A syringe is more accurate if you have one.
  • Don't Confuse with Tylenol: Motrin/Ibuprofen is dosed differently (every 6-8 hours, not 4).

Medical Fact

"The dose is 10mg/kg. This usually works out to about 1 teaspoon (5mL) for every 22lbs of body weight, but use the calculator above for exact numbers."

Parent FAQs

Motrin vs. Advil?

They are the same active ingredient: Ibuprofen. If the concentration on the box is 100mg/5mL, the dosing is identical.

Can I give this to my 3 month old?

NO. Ibuprofen is not recommended for infants under 6 months. Use Acetaminophen (Tylenol) instead for this age group, after consulting your doctor.

Ibuprofen Forms

  • Children's Motrin/Advil 100mg/5mL
  • Infant Drops 50mg/1.25mL
  • Junior Tablets 100mg tab

Did you know?

Antibiotic suspensions are often "reconstituted" by the pharmacist with water. Once mixed, most only last for 10-14 days and many require refrigeration. Check your bottle's storage instructions!
